Under the leadership of Enrico Stefani, M.D., Ph.D., the Division of Molecular Medicine has significantly increased its scientific visibility as reflected by the scholarly recognition of its members in teaching and science, and by the high level of extramural funding in the last two years. UCLA Department of Anesthesiology is eighth in NIH awards by amount for 2006, with grants totaling over three million dollars.

Three members (Stefani, Toro and Wang) have several NIH grants as Principal Investigators and participate in a recently funded Program Project Grant researching on the mechanism of cardiac ischemia and protection.

Dr. Wang also received the Established Investigator Award from American Heart Association, an honor awarded to only 20 recipients each year.

Two Assistant Researchers, Mansoureh Eghbali, Ph.D. in Dr. Stefani's lab and Abderrahmane Alioua, Ph.D. in Dr. Toro's lab, received the prestigious National American Heart Association Scientist Development Grant.
