UCLA Collaborations
The Division of Molecular Medicine in the Department of Anesthesiology has several collaborative projects with scientists at UCLA laboratories and around the world.
A salient program is the joint effort between the Department of Electrical Engineering and the Division of Molecular Medicine to develop a confocal microscope with laser depletion techniques that will bring the resolution to approximately 10-30 nm.
This technological innovation will help foster the nano-proteo-genomic era. Because this type of microscope is nonexistent in the U.S., the success of this project will mark a major breakthrough in biophotonics and its medical applications.

UCLA Cardiovascular Research Laboratory (Heart Lab)
The UCLA Cardiovascular Research Laboratory is a multidisciplinary group that leads world renowned research in cardiovascular disease and physiology. Enrico Stefani, MD, PhD (Anesthesiology, Division of Molecular Medicine) and James Weiss, MD (Medicine, Division of Cardiology) are the co-directors for this collaborative program. The group includes 31 core faculty from the departments of Anesthesiology, Medicine, Pediatrics and Physiology as well as 15 affiliate faculty from the departments of Bioengineering, Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology, Pathology, and Radiology. Eighteen postdoctoral researchers, ten graudate and medical students, nine research technicians and five core staff members contribute to the research efforts. Together, the UCLA Heart Lab leads elaborate research projects related to arrhythmia, biophysics, cell signaling, heart failure, ischemia, mathematical and systems biology.
