HPLC with UV and fluorescent detectors The Shimadzu HPLC system is equipped with a high-sensitivity fluorescent detector. It is used for quantitative measurements of eNOS cofactors, and alternative measurements of free radicals from cells and tissues, with recent demands we have upgraded our HPLC system to include a UV detector and a temperature controlled Autosampler.

DNA engine (Real-Time in Core Facility)

Sterile bench culture hood & Tail-vein blood pressure monitor - Mouse Blood Pressure Monitor: We have obtained a CODA6 non-invasive blood pressure system that has been proven to accurately measure systolic, diastolic blood pressures, heart rate and tail blood volume from mice.

eScan from Bruker
Electron Paramagnetic/Spin Resonance (EPR/ESR) Spectrophotometer: Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are often free radicals with unpaired electrons. Because they are very short-lived, it has been challenging to measure ROS from biological samples. The recently developed electron spin technology has made highly specific, quantitative and reproducible measurements of ROS possible. We have obtained an ESR for measurements of nitric oxide, superoxide and other ROS from live endothelial cells or blood vessels isolated from wild-type or genetically manipulated mice.

Eppendorf microcentrifuge & Rotating waterbath

Color printer/fax machine/scanner & Belly dancer shaker

Analytical balance & mouse chew machine: We have designed and customized a machine that makes mouse chew pellets in house. It is very useful for oral drug delivery to wild-type and genetically manipulated mice.

DNA gel-running and Western blotting corner

Beckman automated cell/particle counter. We have purchased a Beckman Coulter automated cell/particle counter, which is particularly useful in normalizing ESR data by accurate cell numbers.

Semi-dry transfer corner & protocol cabinet

Biotek Synergy HT Multi-functional Plate Reader: This works for UV range quantitation of DNA and RNA samples, fluorescent kinetic detection of ROS production and enzymatic activities, and detection of chemiluminescent ROS probes. Visible light range is used for traditional ELISAs. It also has an automated dispensing system. Each piece of equipment is linked to its own desktop, and each bench is equipped with a personal desktop for each postdoc/student in the laboratory.

Cell Culture Facilities: We have a core cell culture room that is centrally maintained by the Division
